The high levels of sugar in honey help to inhibit bacterial growth.

The only minor problem we have had is with proud flesh growth. This is possibly due to the moist environment created by the honey encouraging vigorous cell replication. Normally this is fine but it needs to be in an environment where the normal restraints to aberrant tissue growth apply.
